I have a question for all of you younger riders. My daughter is only 8 and next school season will be doing the A's. Some travel involved. What do you all do about school if you are on the road in the middle of the week during the season? I understand some kids spend weeks in Florida. She is homeschooled however not by me but rather an old school teacher who I pay to teach them in her home. She is not very understanding of my daughters riding schedule and show schedule. Just wondering how you all do it.

I always talk to my teachers beforehand and get the work I need, or else I bring my school stuff and laptop with me to shows so I can look up my homework online and do it that way. I'm not sure how to do it with your daughter's teacher, but I think the same idea should work.

Honestly, I try very hard not to miss schools for shows. If my horse needs to go in the week, he ships with my trainer and I leave after class on friday. Teachers don't tend to be terribly understanding. If it's not possible, let the teachers know, but they might be jerks about it and make your daughter's life rough. I'd try to feel it out first and see if it's going to make things better or worse to be at a show as opposed to having some strange illness that rears its head on fridays.

I never really had too many problems with the teachers being upset that I missed a lot of school (usually 26 days a year). I talked to them way in advance, and I worked with them to get the homework I would miss. I was lucky though, most of my teachers were really understanding. My teachers looked at it as well the football and soccer team can miss school due to games, you're not any different. Their absences didn't count, my however did.
I think what really helped is that the teachers saw my effort.

My teachers have always been very understanding. One even agreed to let me do an independent study for 2 months so I could go to FL this winter. When I was in HS, it was actually policy that if I got a note signed by my mom and trainer, I wouldn't even get counted absent for the days I missed for shows, just like kids who do regular sports at school.
I would talk to the lady that teaches your daughter, and try to get the work ahead of time so she can keep up with it when she's away, but try to miss as little school as possible.

Of course school comes first.. i try to get all my work ahead of time and in the hotel,car/plane rides i try to get it all done so i don't have to wait until the last minute. i usually miss only a week but still some teachers can be not as understanding.!

I try to plan my horse trials around school holidays, but I end up missing some Fridays during the year. I'm a freshman in HS.
This year I went to Flordia to show for the first time. I went for two weeks, and we kind of put it together at the last minute. My teachers had about a two week warning, and I got permission from the heads of the school. I am generally a pretty good student and get As and Bs. I also go to a smallish private college prep school so that makes it easier for them to let me do something like this. I got some of my work ahead of time, brought my laptop, and checked the homework site. I actually did not end up having much time to do work, but I guess those two weeks were slow moving for my school or something. I have been back a week now, and it has not been that stressful if at all. I am a bit behind but not horribly.

I'm homeschooled! My advice is to just homeschool your daughter yourself. After all, you're likely to be more understanding of her schedule than anyone else, right? My mom homeschools me and takes me to lessons and all my horsey-related activities. Finally, take your daughter's teacher to a horse show! She'll soften up when she sees how amazing equestrian sports are.
