Has anyone been able to get credit for gym with their riding? I know a couple of ice skaters who can get credit because they're at the rink all the time...and they all they have to do is write an essay or something. Well just wondering.....I would LOVE a study hall to do some of my workload instead of a pointless gym class!

some girls I used to ride with got out of gym... I dunno how. I ask my gym teacher and he said I'd have to talk to the department (sp?) or something...

I get independent study credit for gym.. I have a 10 hour per week requirement for riding, and I have to log my weekly activities and get Kip to sign it.

I have a PE exemption from my school district for riding. At the beginning of the year I did a bunch of paperwork for the district and I'm allowed an off period plus any additional days I need to take off for shows. So far I havent had to show anything to the school/district other than the original paperwork.

I think I'm going to try to get credit for riding. If not, I can probably get a doctor's note without much of a problem.
Getting a period off sounds fantastic. I wonder if I could convince my school to let me do that.

At my high school, we had to take 3 semesters of some type of PE, but it was easy for me to get riding to count as my 3 semesters. I just went to my guidance counseler, told her that I was riding about 10-12 hours during the week, plus shows on the weekend, and she gave me a form that I had to have my trainer sign and turn in each semester. It was sooo nice!

Im trying to get out but I need to explain why riding is a sport.
Its the most rediculous thing and I have no idea what to write, any suggestions?
I ride at least 3 hours a day, which is alot more than any of the fieldhockey or basketball players can say and I spent on average 8 hours per weekend horse showing.

Yeah thats what my school was like. In MS, I just got a study hall @ the end of the day with the HS sports people when everyone else went to gym/MS sports. Then in HS I just didn't have to participate in a sport. My trainer had to sign something at the beginning of each semester.

There was a thread on this a while ago with a chick asking the same question. Maybe try doing a search to see what she came up with.

Forreal? I have never even heard of this. It woulda been nice though, they didnt let us use the showers after class so I eventually stopped participating if it meant getting nasty for the entire schoolday.
Talk to your principal or someone high up, it'll show you're serious about it.

I was able to exempt a PE requirement with riding. I had to keep a log proving it required the same or more hours a week than one of the varsity sports and POOF, no PE

We don't have actual gym at my school. Everyone has to do a sport every trimester. Winter trimester you can get out of sports by doing the play. You can also get out of actual games by being a team manager. To have riding count as your sport, you have to take 3 lessons a week. If you don't keep your horse at the school's barn than you have to do work credit the school days you don't ride - work will either be chores, a horse care lecture, or working out (which is new this term).

It must be nice to get out of gym for riding, but I have to admit that floor hockey is pretty awesome. Plus, I don't ride nearly enough for it to count as physical exercise.

I am so jealous of like...all of you, haha.
At my school even if you play a varsity sport you have to take gym. I run varsity XC, winter track, and spring track. Can I possibly get PE credit for the 15+ miles I am running each week? Oh no, no that is asking FAR too much.
idiots.

At my school all i have to have for my 4 years are a 1/2 credit. I dont have to take 1 credit of gym because i'm on the varsity equestrian team. all varsity sports count as 1/2 credit. So i dont think you can actually "get out" of it just because you ride.

When I was in High School I just had to write a detailed schedule of the riding I did and submit photos to my counselor and I got PE credit for riding. That was quite a while ago. Wow. My trainer told me that she would give a free riding lesson to any of the school administators that tried to contest it by saying that riding was not physical activity. There were no takers.

My schools pretty strict about it. No varsity sports are allowed to get out of any gym unless you have a good medical reason. 1 year of gym required.

Or... you can DO gym, work your ass off in it, and be in better shape for riding. Approach your gym teacher for alternative core/lower body work.
