Full Version: One show ribbon haul.

I am having a "discussion" about how many ribbons one person on one horse can attain in one event. Assuming it is a two day show just how many ribbons/sashes can one competitor haul in?

Please answer first at a dressage show then at a hunter/jumper show.

Thanks.
Alexa
I have no idea about the dressage part. I didn't even know you people got ribbons for that type nonsense. I thought you all did it for scores alone.

Can I ride more than one horse?? If I can ride more than one horse, I could get plenty of ribbons. Can I ride more than one horse AND a pony?? Cuz then, boy, the sky's the limit!!

Rumble
For dressage, you can win a ribbon for every test you ride, plus ribbons for high score in your level, sometimes high score of the day jr/sr at schooling shows...the sky's the limit if you have a whole ton of horses to ride.
Rebound
Okay, with my hunter at a 5-day show I have 2 divisions, each with 5 classes and a potential championship ribbon. Add a classic or two...

So at a 5 day show I can get 10 regular ribbons, 2 championship ribbons, and 1 or 2 classic ribbons. Maybe!
Rebound
Sorry. I didn't read that you said a 2-day show.

We don't have a lot of those. I think they still have divisions but there are fewer classes, like maybe two jumping and one flat? And certainly only one classic or eq class.

So I edit my comment to say six regular ribbons, two potential champion or reserve ribbons, and one classic ribbon.
LagunaSeca
We have ywo-day shows here. I usually don't have anyone do more than 5 classes per day, usually less but max 5. So if they did 5 classes per day and were champion or reserve in their hunter division, they could have 11. Some other trainers will have kids doing 7 or 8 classes per day, I think that is a bit much for kids and ponies. I imagine they could have 14 or more if they cross-entered divisions and did the eqs, close to 20 if they were champion/reserve and placed in all the classes. I'm rambling, sorry!

Sorry Alexa you will have to limit yourself to 1 horse on a 2 day show. sweetheart.gif

And yes we do get ribbons for dressage, in fact I just read where someone got 12 of them. There were 3 horse neck sashes and 9 ribbons on a two day show for just the one horse. I never got that many even over a three day show and I got a ribbon in every class. confused-1.gif

I can beat that if you would stop being so stingy and let me ride two horses. Or how about a mule and a pony? Has a mule ever competed at one of them there "dressage shows"? I'm gonna name my dressage mule Basse Ecole.

LOL Good try but I know the Canadian and I am sure the American rules actually state a mule cannot compete ( at least in the recognized shows). Maybe Molly Ecole may be a better name?

Maybe the American dressage shows now give out ribbons for turnout like hunter?
spuddy
I show two horses usually in two divisions. Each division is either 2 over fences and one flat, or one over fences and one flat. In the case of a two day show showing both horses, I could technically get twelve regular ribbons and four champion/reserve ribbons for each horse (I think...). I never have though...;)

We probably even give ribbons to the spectators who can stay awake during a...what do you guys call it? A round? A trip? Anyway, they hand out orange ribbons to the people in the "crowd" who don't fall asleep.
VTequestrian86
At a 2-day show I'll usually do two hunter divisions (6 classes total), two equitation classes, and one medal. So 9 regular ribbons and 2 champion/reserve ribbons possible in total.

Well that is the closest anyone has come to the 12 this person won.

Now Alexa clearly you need some lessons in the art of dressage tests! sweetheart.gif

One horse/rider is allowed to do two levels with a possible Kur ( freestyle) as well for that level. Assuming they placed well in each level they could potentially get 3 ribbons and a championship ribbon or 4 ribbons for that day. Over two days they could get 8 ribbons. If they got another ribbon for any "special event" then we up that to 9 ribbons.

That leaves 3 unaccounted for if someone posted a picture showing 12 ribbons. confused-1.gif

That is of course not counting the ribbons given to the spectators that stayed awake so maybe that accounts for the extra three? icon_sleep.gif

I find it highly unlikely that three people were able to stay awake through an entire dressage test. This, and only this, leads me to believe the person in question is a liar! I insist that you call them out!

I did.

I don't know Alexa is this performance sleepable?. They got 69 % for it by an "S" judge! sweetheart.gif

And here are all the ribbons one person in that quadrille got on their horse over the two day show.

tpa921
Maybe this rider did a local walk/trot/canter division
If they did then they can do like wtc pleasure/eq/hunter suitability/ etcand wtc crossrail eq/pleasure/etc
When I was little I would get like 4+ ribbons a day doing that kind of stuff, I'm sure a decent rider could get 12 no problem over 2 days.

Thanks Laguna for your effort. sweetheart.gif

I does help when there are short entries ( 8 or less) and personally I have always thought dressage sucks when it came to ribbons or prizes. There is so little opportunity to get something. black&blue.gif

Try eventing. You work your ass off for up to 3 days and if you're lucky, you might come home with one tiny ribbon. When I went and did my first recognized dressage test and got 4 ribbons over 2 days, I thought I'd hit the freakin jackpot.
HJRider04
Well, when I did the MHJA "C" circuit which is 2 days of horse showing. Primarys was 2'3" and Intermediates was 2'6". There was 3 Primary hunter o/f, primary eq o/f, prim eq otf, and an u/s. The same for the intermediates. Then you usually did two warm up trips in the morning for your primarys. Add in a classic and a medal that's 16 classes.
sa11yb
Add another 3 jump classes and a hack to what hjrider04 mentioned if your horse is green and the trainer takes it in the green division.

Yup I think eventing is probably the suckiest as far as ribbon haul. Three days and one ribbon.

On some events though I was told that they may give out special section ribbons like dressage...cross country and the stadium jumping so on some 4 ribbons over the 3 days is possible but even that sucks.

Of course if you happen to be the shows secretary you can get to keep any left over ribbons not handed out. That could translate into a bunch if the show is not well attended. sweetheart.gif

Whoever said that statement had anything to do with me?

I happen to know one person that displayed all her *ribbons* and when I asked her from what show it was I noted it was not a show she attended ( as I was there) but her mom was the secretary. I remembered there were ribbons not picked up by the winning competitors ( and now I know where they went).

I am just a bit suspicious now of ribbons people say they get when it appears to be a little over the top like in the picture I posted. You just don't get that many at DRESSAGE shows so I posted this thread to see if the hunter/jumper ( or eventing) shows produce as many as is claimed in that picture.

Here, in you're allowed to do three dressage tests a day so in a 2 day show that a potential of 6 ribbons then there's championship ribbons for each grades. So 7 (if you're riding only one horse). Showjumping and show hunter - maximum of 2 classes a day and one championship class so in a 2 day show thats 5 ribbons.

That still doesn't add up to the 12 that are claimed to have been won by the person that posted the ribbon picture I put up here and even allowing for an extra ribbon for just showing up each day ( now 9 ribbons) we are 3 over.

So does the US have other places your 7 ribbons can expand to 12 ?

Maybe turnout, best looking rider, best looking horse or just making it through the day?

There aren't a lot of AQHA approved shows that give out ribbons anymore. I'm not sure why but people just don't do it. I do know a girl who went to a 4 day horse show and got 16 first places though. She won under all 4 judges in her novice and 13+ under western pleasure and in her open and youth halter classes. Talk about exciting!

My daughter went to our county 4-H Fair. They give the Dutch ribbons in addition to the rosettes. So, she got Dutch blues in Fitting and Showmanship, W/T Equitation, W/T Pleasure, W/T Written Test, and Costume Class. Then she got blue rosettes for Eq. and Pleasure. And the Day End Novice Champion tricolor and trophy. So, she got eight ribbons and a trophy, I guess! LOL!
