What would be the absolute biggest pony you could breed to a 10ish hand pony without the foal being to big for the mare.....
I was wondering because we are getting a small pony from my aunt but the pony is to small for anyone in my family to ride...plus shes not trained beyond halter stuff yet so I was thinking of breeding her....

hummm I bet you could do 14hh and get a medium. I've heard of people breeding clydes to arab mares

Maybe bigger. I would ask a vetsince you have to do a breeding chek-up anyways.

Please don't breed the pony unless you have something specific in mind to produce. Not to be rude to you, but this random "the horse isn't good for anything else so let's just BREED IT" nonesense is exactly why we have such a large population of unused horses in the US (aka goes to slaughter).

14 sounds like it's on the high end to me. I'd look for a smaller large or a medium. We've transfered 16-17 hand embryos into 14.3 mares, and haven't had a problem. Is she big bodied or narrow?

If she's too small to ride maybe you could train her to drive...

at my old farm the stallion is a perch. they used to breed him to small TBs and never had a problem, I think that is too big but things worked out and we didnt have to many problems.

well i do have something in mind..a rideable pony. Hello do you think im that stupid to go hmmm we cant ride her so we will breed her like crazy. no definatley not. And besides Im talking bout breding her ONCE just to get a bigger pony...then we will either train her to be a little leadline pony or something or just keep her around as a pet. I cant show her in Mini classes because she Not a mini and other than that shes too small for anyone I know....or we might train her to drive..who knows...

wow I love how you assume things guys!!! I also just love how you only quote PART of a sentence to make you sound right...that sentence REALLY said "Hello do you think im that stupid to go hmmm we cant ride her so we will breed her like crazy" In case you were wondering

....
And we are getting her because my aunt needs to get rid of her horses and she wants them to stay in the family and we are the only ones who have a barn....no jk we are just getting her for no reason at all

Breed her, breed her "like crazy"...I believe the point is you wanted to breed her because you have no other use for her.
If that's the case, have fun, but do something with the damn foal. The last thing we need here is another foal "because it's cute" and suddenly it grows up and adds to the population of unwanted horses.

I get what your saying but what dragoon is saying is that she dosent want you to breed her just because you can... If you have a good use for the foal and you want it to be rideable then find a decent stallion and make sure you kno what you want to do with the foal dont, like dragoon said have a foal just because its cute.

It's not misquoting FF, it's making a point, which you and your little friend obviously missed out on. I can't wait for every other person with a useless mare to breed it so we have ... you know what? Nevermind. Do whatever you want and have fun doing it.

On a note that hopefully the both of you can understand, talk to your vet and trainer about
good studs and how to select one for your mare. Good luck in the horse industry girls.

well what are you gonna do with this mare AFTER she has a foal? its not like suddenly in a year someone in your family will shrink to her size.....

She's not worth much at slaughter since she is only a small. Maybe if you fatten her up a bit? Or if you breed her to a draft horse, then sell her to slaughter when she is at 10.5 months, then she would be worth some money.

ok heres all the info to clear stuff up...
She is a 10ish hand mare that is about 5 years old and only halter broke. She is to small for anyone i know to ride and the only reason we are taking her is because she is my aunts and my aunt wants her to stay in the family because she has to sell her horses. We are the only ones in our family with horse facilities so we are taking her. At this point I would like to breed her to a bigger pony to get a foal who will eventually be a show pony for my little sisters (obviously after training with my trainer who has trained many a greenie in her life). The mare though will either be kept for company or a pet or will be trained and sold as a leadline pony or pet. and i was jk about the slaughter thing
also although my horses are in my backyard does not mean i am not knowledgeable. I have been around horses my whole life and have been riding since age 6 (I am 16). I have my own horse who I basically trained and show in Hunters and Eq. My mother is also a knowledgeable horseperson since she was riding since age 5 also. My trainer is well known and trains horses all the time. I also have a great vet and blacksmith.
I hope this clears up that Im not going to overbreed or give horses to slaughter ......

I would suggest that before breeding, you do a lot more training on her. This is because the one biggest thing that comes from the mare when breeding is temperament.
She is 'halter broke' (I assume this means she leads, ties up, travels, has her feet done regularly and stuff like that - we don't have the term 'halter-broke' here - so correct me if I'm wrong). Although you can tell a lot about how easy she is going to be to handle from this, you'll see a lot more once you ride her and get a true feel for what's in her heart.
I selected my mare as a weanling (with the intention of her being a jumping pony, and a broodmare - she grew to not be a pony though!). She's now 9 and I am only now comfortable that I know her well enough to believe that she has a good enough heart and temperament to bother with breeding her. I am still searching for the right partner for her though... this whole breeding thing takes a lot of thought - it's very expensive (in terms of time and money). Just make sure you don't rush it - I'm sure you'll make all the right decisions in time

I dont think people were trying to be mean about it... I think that what they were saying is they just want to make sure your breeding her for the right reasons instead of all the wrong ones!
